Council, at its Ordinary Meeting of 13 December, 2011 when considering a report regarding the Operation of Council's Animal Care Facility, resolved in part that Council work with rescue organisations approved by the Division of Local Government.
This in effect means that all rescue groups that apply to work with Council must have a clause 17(1)(c) exemption granted by the Department of Local Government under the terms of the Companion Animals Act.
Once a rescue organisation has completed an application form(110KB, PDF) and have been approved, they are invited to sign an agreement(130KB, PDF) confirming the arrangements under which they work with Council's Animal Care Facility as a rescue group. The application assessment and agreement endorsement process may take up to several weeks to complete.
Once a rescue organisation has been approved it may contact Council's Animal Care Facility and discuss its interest in rescuing impounded or surrendered companion animals that are available for sale. A number of rescue organisations have been approved by Council to rescue animals from Council's Animal Care Facility (see list below).
If an animal is rescued from Council's Animal Care Facility the rescue group must comply with the terms of the animal rescue agreement which includes a responsibility to ensure the animal rescued is cared for appropriately and registered and de-sexed prior to its sale.
