The bridge over Bunbury Curran Creek on Railway Parade/Atchison Road will be closed from Monday 6 July 2026 to allow major bridge replacement works to begin. The closure will remain in place during construction.

Project Summary

The existing bridge is nearing the end of its operational lifespan and requires replacement to ensure the continued safety and reliability of this important local connection to Glenfield Railway Station.

The upgrade will:

  • Improve access for motorists, pedestrians and local businesses.
  • Support connectivity between Glenfield and the surrounding industrial and commercial area.
  • Deliver improved shared pedestrian and cyclist pathways.

The project includes construction of a new two-lane bridge and upgraded active transport connections.

Construction is expected to be completed by mid-2027.

Road closures and detours

Traffic and pedestrian detours will be in place from Monday 6 July and Railway Parade will be closed between the bridge at Bunbury Curran Creek and Salisbury Avenue.

A detour will be in place via Victoria Road, Canterbury Road and Belmont Road for drivers travelling between Glenfield and Macquarie Fields.

Motorists are advised to allow for extra travel time during construction.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the Railway Parade bridge being upgraded?

The existing bridge over Bunbury Curran Creek is nearing the end of its operational lifespan and requires replacement to maintain safety and reliability for all users.

Why are you upgrading the bridge now?

While the bridge may look usable and continue to function in the short-term, the structure and current condition of the bridge is aging and needs to be replaced. We've secured funding through the NSW Governement's Western Sydney Infrastrcuture Grants Program to fully upgrade the bridge.

This upgrade will provide a longer-term solution, reduce ongoing maintenance costs and improve the bridge's strength so it can support heavier vehicles, improving access and connections across the area as the region continues to grow.

As a part of the project, the footpaths over the bridge will also be widens to make it safer and easier for people to walk around and move through the area.

What traffic changes can be expected during construction?

During construction, there will be a detour through Canterbury Road for pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles, and changed traffic conditions around the bridge and nearby roads. Traffic management plans will be in place, and clear signage will guide motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists along the detour. We encourage you to plan ahead and allow extra time for delays.

Will there be impacts on nearby residents during construction?

While construction works will take place away from houses, there may be some noise and increased construction vehicle movements during work hours.

Works will be carried out in line with approved construction hours wherever possible. Residents will be notified of any additional works.

How will pedestrian, cyclist, and emergency access be managed?

Safe access for pedestrians and cyclists will be maintained along the surrounding shared paths wherever possible during construction. Emergency vehicle access to the site will be maintained at all times. Once complete, the bridge will offer improved safety and accessibility for all users.

Will public transport services be affected?

Some bus routes have been affected.

Please check with Transport for NSW and local bus operators for the latest service information and any route changes during construction.

How can I stay updated?

Residents will be able to receive project updates through Council’s website and social media channels.

What work will be carried out?

The project includes:

  • demolition of the existing bridge
  • construction of a new two-lane bridge
  • upgrades to pedestrian and cyclist connections

Is the shared path on the bridge still accessible during construction?

No, the bridge, including the shared path, is closed to the public. The old, existing bridge will be demolished in order for the new, safer bridge to be rebuilt in its place.

Pedestrian detours are in place.
