Campbelltown developed a Sister City relationship with Coonamble as part of the Year of the Outback celebrations in 2002.
Councils across Australia were encouraged to link up with rural and inland communities in order to recognise the uniqueness and potential of the Australian Outback and bring these communities together to form strong and lasting relationships.
We selected Coonamble as our Sister City for its outback character, indigenous history and accessibility.
The relationship was so successful it was made permanent, and continues today to promote resource sharing between Councils, and foster a greater understanding between urban and rural Australia.
To commemorate the beginning of the relationship
- Guests from Coonamble attended the Campbelltown City Mayoral Ball
- Coonamble hosted a Campbelltown vs Coonamble Rugby match which featured local rugby groups from both areas
- A Coonamble delegate participated in Campbelltown City's Festival of Fisher's Ghost celebrations.
