Citizen scientists needed for koala monitoring program

Residents living in or near koala habitat can now help track Campbelltown’s koala population as part of the largest monitoring program ever conducted in the region.

A key part of Council’s Comprehensive Koala Plan of Management, is to set up a long-term koala monitoring program to better inform understanding of the local koala colony’s locations, movements and numbers.

Council is looking for residents living on properties larger than 10,000m2 in rural areas of Macquarie Fields, Long Point, Ingleburn, Minto Heights, Kentlyn and Wedderburn to be part of the program.

Koalatown room opens at Visitor Information Centre

Visitors and residents can now learn about Campbelltown’s unique local koala population in the new Koalatown room at the Campbelltown Visitor Information Centre.

The room contains a wealth of educational information on the local koala colony including European and Aboriginal historical information and ways we can protect our koalas.

Visitors can also go on a ‘pick your koala’ adventure by getting information on the best places to find koala habitat and tips for when they are onsite to increase chances of seeing a koala in the wild.

Draft conservation plan announced

This week, the NSW State Government has unveiled the draft Cumberland Plain Conservation Plan which is now available for public comment.

We are always excited for anything that will help to conserve critical biodiversity and are taking the time to review and respond to the plan.

Experts advice to protect Campbelltown koala population

An independent panel of koala expert scientists have provided the NSW Government its report into the protection of koalas in Campbelltown.

This NSW Chief Scientist report includes proposed measures to help conserve our koala habitat that we are always interested to see.

Koala habitat restoration project

We have started the next stage of Smiths Creek Enhancing Koala Habitat project at Ruse.

So far, we and the Greater Sydney Local Land Services and Bushcare volunteers have restored 30ha of this Ruse site, which is the largest urban bushland reserve in Campbelltown.

First official Koalatown school

We are really excited to have named our first Koalatown school. Campbelltown East Public School have been officially recognised supporters of Koalatown, during a tree planting event at their school in August.
