New Koshigaya Park Playground ready for play

A new destination for play and family fun has opened at Koshigaya Park following the completion of a $2.5 million playground upgrade.
The community is invited to celebrate the new playground at a special opening event on Saturday 12 September from 10am to 12pm.
The major upgrade has transformed the playground at one of Campbelltown’s most popular parks, delivering a range of new play experiences for children of different ages and abilities.
Mayor of Campbelltown Darcy Lound said the completed playground was a fantastic addition to Koshigaya Park, providing a fun and welcoming space for local families while celebrating Campbelltown’s longstanding sister city relationship with Koshigaya, Japan.
“Koshigaya Park is already one of Campbelltown’s favourite places for families to visit and this new playground will make it even better, giving families more reasons to come and enjoy a picnic or celebration,” Cr Lound said.
“There’s something for kids of all ages to enjoy, whether they want to climb the origami crane, race along the flying fox, bounce on the trampolines or cool down in the water play area,” he said.
“The community played an important role in shaping the playground, with hundreds of people sharing their ideas during consultation, and it’s wonderful to now see many of those ideas brought to life.”
About the playground
At the centre of the playground is a unique origami crane-themed play structure, celebrating Campbelltown’s longstanding sister city relationship with Koshigaya, Japan. The structure includes a slide, climbing nets, basket swing, jungle ropes, talking tube, xylophone and pommel crossing.
Cherry blossom trees surround the playground, adding to its Japanese theme and providing a stunning seasonal display for visitors.
Other features include a flying fox, swings, embankment play and water play zones, and an active and inclusive play area.
Accessibility has been at the forefront of the playground design, with inclusive equipment including a carousel, accessible in-ground trampoline and specially designed seesaw.
The water play area features textured stepping stones and crushed sandstone, creating a sensory play experience and a place for visitors to cool down during summer.
A play communication board has also been installed to support children and adults with communication access needs.
The general play areas are fully shaded to provide greater protection from the sun, alongside new shelters for families and groups wanting to gather or host events such as birthday parties.
A new fence separates the playground from Hurley Street while keeping it open and connected to the rest of Koshigaya Park.
Community opening event
The community is invited to celebrate the new playground at Koshigaya Park from 10am to 12pm on Saturday 12 September.
The event will include a Daruma Doll interactive workshop, Taiko Drum display, face painting and a BBQ.
“I invite everyone to come along and celebrate this fantastic new playground with a range of Japanese-themed activities that honour our longstanding sister city relationship with Koshigaya,” Cr Lound said.
