About homelessness

It is the responsibility of the Department of Communities and Justice to reach out to people experiencing homelessness and to support their safety, wellbeing and support them to find appropriate housing. There are also several local services that visit people sleeping rough to offer support.

Some people agree to receive help and move into temporary accommodation through, while others refuse assistance. Services can only help those who want to work with them. Homelessness is not a crime, so Police, Councils, and other Services have limited options if assistance is refused.

When people agree to receive help, Homes NSW and partner agencies provide accommodation and intensive support to address the reasons why they are sleeping rough. There are many reasons why some people choose to continue sleeping rough. Services will continue to visit rough sleepers and remind those who have previously declined help that support is always available.

Campbelltown City Council carries out a supportive and facilitative role in coordination, service support, planning, and community safety. When community reports are made, Councill will take action to notify the Department of Communities and Justice and, where appropriate, refer people experiencing, or at risk of experiencing, homelessness to Link2Home.
