Campbelltown Council’s bridge management strategy highly commended in engineering excellence awards

Campbelltown City Council bridge management strategy was highly commended in the recent Institute of Public Works Engineering Australia NSW Engineering Excellence Awards.

Mayor of Campbelltown, Cr George Brticevic, said it was greatly deserved recognition of the work done by Council staff to ensure the ongoing safety of the city’s culverts, pedestrian and road bridges by Australia’s leading municipal engineering body.

“Council’s bridge assets include 31 road bridges, 29 pedestrian bridges and 119 culverts with $82 million dollar replacement value,” Cr Brticevic said.

“The challenge we face as a Council is to ensure that all bridges and culverts in our road network remain fit for their intended purpose over long periods of time at a minimum lifecycle cost,” he said.

“The Bridge Asset Management Strategy is a combination of management, engineering, safety and economics that help staff to determine best actions to treat all bridges in the network.”

Cr Brticevic said the strategy had enabled Council staff to minimise structural deterioration and optimise the service levels of local bridges while remaining within budget.

“The bridge management strategy developed by Council’s Assets Team is providing invaluable economic outcomes for the Council and the community,” he said.

“This innovative approach is resulting in a high quality and sustainable bridge asset network.”

The IPWEA awards received 106 nominations across 10 categories including projects, programs and profiles.
