Safe disposal of needles and sharps
It is important to dispose of needles and sharps safely to prevent the risk of injury to people in the community.
What are community sharps?
Community sharps include any needle, syringe, lancet, or similar equipment used in:
- Managing diabetes or other medical conditions
- Injecting medications or other substances
- Animal care for pets or livestock
Why safe disposal matters
Community sharps must always be stored securely and kept separate from other waste.
Sharps can seriously harm waste workers, cleaners and the wider community if not handled properly. Never dispose sharps in:
Household bins (red, yellow or green bins)
Kerbside clean ups
Public litter bins
Toilets or drains
Bushland, parks, streets, or waterways
How to dispose of sharps
If you inject away from home
- Use a designated sharps bin in public toilets or community spaces; or
- Store used items in a sealed sharps container and drop it off at a listed sharps disposal location (see below)
