For Matthew and Others; Journeys with Schizophrenia is a multidisciplinary project that examines through visual arts, text, performance and social histories, the multiple impacts of schizophrenia on individuals, families and communities.

The project aims to raise public awareness of one of the most stigmatised illnesses in contemporary society by drawing on the stories of men and women across Australia who live with, and/or are affected by this illness. The project partners Sane Australia, Arts NSW, Campbelltown Arts Centre, Ivan Dougherty Gallery, Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre and Penrith Regional Gallery & The Lewers Bequest have each contributed substantial resources towards the project. The project will be presented across three major cultural venues: Campbelltown Arts Centre, Ivan Dougherty Gallery and Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre.

Exhibition dates
1 Sept – 22 Oct Campbelltown Arts Centre
6 Oct – 11 Nov Ivan Dougherty Gallery, UNSW, College of Fine Arts
23 Sept – 21 Oct Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre

Each venue will present different components of the project. Campbelltown Arts Centre will present an eight-week exhibition from 1 September to 22 October that includes newly commissioned visual artwork and social history objects on loan from artists, families, organisations and communities across Australia. The Centre will also present the ‘Mad Pride’ concert on 7 October which profiles through performance, the work of writers and performance artists who are living with schizophrenia. A number of local artists will present their work at ‘Mad Pride’. In addition, the Centre will host an Art Market on 21 and 22 October, where visual artists who live with schizophrenia will set up displays of work to sell. A major catalogue publication and education kit will be published to promote, document and support the project.
