In Concert

Inspired by the recent donation of David Fairbairn’s series Drawn Together V.H. & J.E.L. No.1-9, In Concert brings together works from the Campbelltown City Council Art Collection that have been paired together – exploring relationships that are marital, platonic and familial, or conflicting identities within the self.
In a series of nine portraits, Fairbairn explores the decades-long bond between Joan Long and Vija Heinrichs, long term members of the Friends of Campbelltown Arts Centre.
Lezlie and Peter Tilley’s works from the series Artistic relationship explore the collaboration and expression of working as a couple. The small-scale assemblage providing an intersection between their practices. In contrast, frequent collaborators, Angela and Hossein Valamanesh showcase their individual practices using differing media in Pinstripe — group D and Recent Arrival.
Despite having very different artistic practices, Joan Brassil held the work of her friend Lenore Rays in high regard — calling her flower paintings a “prime love and dedication” — whose work is in stark contrast to Brassil’s own explorations of material and sculptural forms.
From Melville Island, Freda Warlapinni started painting later in life, depicting the influence of the seasons on the Tiwi Islands. Her practice also reflected the influence of her father’s practice painting ceremonial pukumani poles. Freda’s son Linus followed in her footsteps, also beginning painting later in life, drawing upon his family’s history painting and personal interpretation of traditional Tiwi designs.
Finally, in All quiet on the Western Front, Jamil Yamani reflects on the cultural contradictions inherent to the migrant experience, balancing the need to retain one’s cultural identity while acknowledging the influence societal culture has on the individual.
The Campbelltown City Council Art Collection comprises almost 1600 artworks by more than 650 Australian artists. It is focused on major artworks by leading contemporary artists from, living in or connected to Western Sydney, and from around Australia. The Collection grows each year through donations, bequests, the acquisitive Fisher’s Ghost Art Award, and through the Australian Government’s Cultural Gifts Program.
