Christine (Vardy) Thomson a voice of Campbelltown

Voices of Campbelltown Video

A much loved character from one of Campbelltown's oldest families dating back to the 1830s or 1840s. Christine's grandfather, Bullah Vardy, was one of Campbelltown's war heroes from 1914 to 1918 and her mother Joy Vardy worked for the Town Clerk, Bruce McDonald.

Discussions include: How the locals knew everyone, and the good things to do in Campbelltown when you were kids, walking down Queen Street, or to swim out at the Woolwash and going to the old picture show run by Geoff Eves. Things that make the town great, medical facilities, being one of the first waitresses at the Campbelltown Catholic Club in the 1960s. Local Studies Librarian, Andrew Allen, joins Chris as they explore the historic connection to Quandong Cottage and St Patrick's School. St John's is the Campbelltown Chris came from having gone to school there, and connection as a place where her ancestors went to worship. Chris also shares how she is very proud of the Vardy name, to see it on the stained glass windows in the church, the Joy Vardy plaque in Koshigaya Park and how she would like Campbelltown to keep the historic aspect.

A documentary by: Tom and Jeff McGill to help Council celebrate 200 Years of Campbelltown in 2020.
